Launch of Foundation in Milan, Italy

It would be recalled that the Mayor of Milan, Hon. Mrs. Moratti, the President of the Lombardy Region, Mr. Formigoni and the President of the Expo 2015, Mrs. Bracco have jointly set up the Alliance for Africa Foundation, with H.E. John A. Kufuor as its first President.

This foundation was launched in Milan, Italy on the 4th of February 2009 at a Press Conference attended by all the personalities named above.

The core objects of the Foundation are as follows;

–pursuance of Social Solidarity
–Healthcare and social health services
–Charity
–Education and training
–Defence of civil rights
–Promotion of growth and development in as many African countries as possible

This report is an outline of activities that took place over the two day period signifying the launch of the Foundation.


This Press Conference was preceded by a private lunch hosted by the Mayor of Milan Mrs. L. Moratti in honour of H.E Kufuor.

The Foundation was launched at a press conference attended by about 95 persons, most of whom represented various Italian and International Press houses.

The highlight of the launch was the signing of the letter of intent by Mayor Moratti, Presidents Formigoni, Bracco and Ex-President Kufuor. The Letter of Intent is the first in the process to establish the Foundation according to Italian Law.

The President gave an outline of his vision, and indicated his willingness to continue to serve the people of Ghana and Africa.

He was mobbed by both Africans and Europeans who had thronged the event to hear him speak.

H.E Mr. Kufuor, was the guest of honour at a lunch organised by the Alliance for Africa Foundation Partners to introduce him to Italy.

The lunch was attended by the diplomatic community (especially African embassies in Italy), the political elite, policy makers, governance experts, representatives of various Italian NGOs and the media.

In outlining his vision for the Foundation and the future, H.E. Kufuor explained that he believed in building partnerships to achieve the objects of Alliance for Africa Foundation, and invited all to join in this noble endeavour.
